Computational photography and Its Effects (2023)

Computational photography and Its effects: In this article, We will learn about computational photography, The pros, and cons of this way of processing images. If you feel some information you read is wrong or misleading then make sure to comment below so that I can make changes.

Real Images vs Computational photography

First of all, what is computational photography and how does it work, The answer to this question is that computational photography is the term used for an AI processed image, This way of image processing is fully automatic and the image processing could be in real-time or process the image after its taken from the sensor.

The processing of these images is different for each company or each manufacturer But we will go through a few of these techniques that manufacturers do to make an image look better than it is in real life.

#1. To take multiple shots using all the cameras (i.e wide-angle, telephoto, and the main sensor) and take the best feature of each image and put it into a single photo.

#2. Taking an image in the best scenario with the best cameras (stored in the phone) and overlaying on the image being taken in real-time. This was once done by Huawei to make the moon photography by phone look better.

#3. Recognizing the face and changing the shape size of each feature of the face, to make the face look better than it actually is.

There are tons of other processing ways and methods in this field to make an image look better but these three were the ones that I was most amazed about.

Pros of Computational photography:

The pros of this are just that it makes everything look better than it actually is, it can be shared with the world even if the person taking the photo doesn't know how to edit.

Cons of Computational photography:

This way of making photos different from reality and showing it on our devices with more beauty and colour added to it just makes it fake in a way, Yes the places or the people in the photos taken are real but the way it is more attractive than it actually (in person) is fully artificially added. And it's just misinformation and this misinformation could lead to rumours and conflicts or it could just make you stick to your phone more and more because everything you see through this device is more attractive and better than the real-life your living, In other words, this technology has the potential to pull you away from the reality.
